The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
